Summary and Learning Objectives

Summary

Psychotherapy, couple therapy, and family therapy often require psychologists, licensed mental health professionals, and ministry leaders help clients forgive. The problem can be clinical, such as instances of abuse, recovery from injuries and illnesses, couple or family therapy, or chronic health and mental health problems, and sometimes subclinical, but integral to treating diagnosable disorders. In this workshop, participants will learn of various options for including forgiveness treatment modalities such as Enright’s Process Forgiveness Therapy or integration of evidence-based principles into one’s treatment as usual (TAU). Furthermore, participants will be able to identify and examine adjunctive treatments which can involve REACH Forgiveness psychoeducational groups and evidence-based DIY workbooks and integration into couple and family treatment protocols. Some of these options may be explicitly accommodated to Christian values for, beliefs, and practices for willing Christian clients, and others secular, non-religious clients. Participants will analyze the effectiveness of secular forgiveness models for willing Christians clients and compare it to explicitly Christian accommodated treatments.

Learning Objectives

Outline the major approaches for forgiveness in therapy or adjuncts to therapy as usual

Identify six evidence-based principles abstracted from 14 evidence-based secular forgiveness interventions which can be utilized in therapy with all clients

Summarize the five categories of forgiveness methods used by Christian churches to help people forgive to create effective treatment plans for willing Christian clients.
