Summary and Learning Objectives

Summary:

Children are showing more mental health issues than ever before, which means that parents are having to help their children navigate their mental health journeys. Psychologists, licensed mental health professionals, medical personnel, and ministry leaders have more of a role in guiding parents through these more difficult times. In this workshop, attendees will examine the new research on what is affecting kids and possible mental health pitfalls of AI, social media, and technology. Attendees will explore techniques and tips to help parents aide their child from a new diagnosis to stabilization, with special attention to various issues such as bullying, identifying red flags for worsening symptoms, sullen or shutting down behavior, emotional regulation coaching, and relationship repair with the parent. Furthermore, attendees will be able to acquire specific techniques to work with parents on their own stress management, relationship issues, and grief process for their children’s diagnosis. This workshop will give specific attention to those parents coming from a faith perspective with specific faith-based strategies.

Learning Objectives:

Outline new research on the mental health of youth and various aspects of daily life that are exacerbating these issues

Describe various techniques to aide parents in helping their children thrive in light of a mental health diagnoses, which include bullying, emotional regulation coaching, and relationship repair

Summarize how to help parents differentiate between “red flags” versus developmentally expected behavior.

Examine various strategies to help parents prioritize their own mental health with stress management and grief processing.
