Summary
There are no perfect marriages, and all relationships contain sin and suffering. However, the training counselors and pastors receive to help troubled couples does not specifically address domestic abuse issues nor identify the subtle dynamics of other emotionally destructive attitudes and behaviors. Studies show that one in four Christin women reports being in an emotionally destructive marriage; yet, we are often ill-equipped to handle these situations in a competent and compassionate manner that helps victims and perpetrators.
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
- Identify the difference between a difficult marriage, a disappointing marriage, and a destructive marriage and know when the line is crossed
- Recognize three specific situations when marital counseling is contraindicated and can be more harmful to the individuals and the marriage
- Implement four distinct stages of counseling and the goals necessary in each step for destructive patterns to be broken
