Summary
Ethical codes identify the spiritual dimension as a necessary component of competent counseling, marriage and family therapy, and social work. However, evidence suggests that many licensed mental health professionals lack comprehensive training in the value of addressing spirituality and faith in the counseling process. This workshop will examine some of the myths and research in the field and explore the development and incorporation of a biblical and spiritual foundation in Christian counseling with Christian clients. The workshop is designed, in particular, for licensed mental health professionals who want to improve their knowledge and skill in counseling people of faith.
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
- Discuss the importance of addressing the spiritual dimension in counseling, marriage and family therapy, and social work
- Identify some of the myths and research associated with religion and spirituality in mental health
- Develop practices for licensed mental health professionals that have demonstrated value in assisting clients with building their spirituality
