Summary

More than half of all married couples meet the criteria for sexual dysfunction at some point in their marriages. Much of this conflict arises out of common myths and attribution errors. Recent research reveals several valuable truths helpful for licensed mental health professionals and other couple-helpers to know while guiding couples through common sexual stuck points and conflict areas. Participants will examine updated data from this study and observe potential narrative and behavioral techniques useful in helping couples address and prevent disappointment, frustrations, and other tensions in their sexual relationships—and the overall marriage problems that can result.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  1. Identify at least five core takeaways from the latest matched pair sample research on sex with married couples
  2. Discuss the implications of attribution errors on sexual attitudes and sexual function within married couples
  3. Utilize narrative and behavioral counseling techniques for licensed mental health professionals to correct these attribution errors and assist in enriching sexual connection in married couples
