Summary
Recent data suggest an increase in the number of African-Americans seeking therapy. There are also reports that African-Americans are terminating therapy early. Additional research is needed to understand both the increase and early terminations. As licensed mental health professionals care for African-Americans in a culturally competent manner, exploring the influence of social determinants of health on African-American clients’ overall health and well-being is important. Instead of looking at clients through an individual lens, therapists are encouraged to view them within the five key areas of the social determinants of health, which include: neighborhood and built environment, health and healthcare, economic stability, education, and social and community context.
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
- List the five domains of the social determinants of health
- Discuss the influence the social determinants of health have on the health outcomes of African-Americans
- Review a case study through the lens of the social determinants of health and provide a list of therapeutic interventions
- Identify opportunities for additional research to inform future therapeutic interventions and community partnerships
