Summary
Psychologists and licensed mental health professionals often care for individuals in the aftermath of a traumatic event. The symptoms following these events frequently disrupt every aspect of a person’s life, typically leading to difficulties in daily functioning and, at times, even suicidal ideation and behaviors. These traumatic events are often prolonged or repetitive, leaving the victim deeply wounded while producing complex symptoms that require treatment. This workshop is designed to give psychologists and licensed mental health professionals foundational knowledge and vital skills for effectively treating individuals who suffer from traumatic reactions, specifically complex trauma. Participants will also be able to identify and respond to the spiritual needs and issues specific to a Christian client and apply a three-phase treatment model to all types of clients.
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
- Describe the nature and definitions of trauma, its expected symptoms with selected treatments, and the criteria for a PTSD diagnosis by a licensed mental health professional or psychologist
- Identify the effects of trauma on development
- Summarize a biblical understanding of trauma with applications for a Christian client and observe specific techniques for use in treating complex trauma
- Apply aspects of the three-phase treatment model for complex PTSD and explain risk factors for secondary trauma and summarize methods for developing resistance
